HOMEMADE HUMMINGBIRD NECTAR WITHOUT BOILING FULL

Hummingbirds have very high metabolisms and require feeding about every 10 minutes! With large appetites and very high energy output, they can eat two to three times their body weight every day! To give perspective, that’s the human equivalent of an entire fridge full of food!.There are many advantages to attracting them to your garden! They are incredible pollinators because of their long beaks and small size! This makes them able to access the pollen in long blooms that other birds can’t.Studies show they can remember every flower they’ve ever visited! As well, they keep track of how long they should wait to revisit to ensure the flowers have time to make more nectar! And they remember human faces, too! Especially those that are responsible for refilling their feeders (of course!). Hummingbirds have mega minds! Their brains make up 4.2% of their bodies. When defending their territory, they use aggressive calls that sound like squabbling, chattering, and squealing among one another. On top of that, their tiny wings flap between 50-80 times per second depending on size and species!! That’s up to 4,000 wingbeats per minute! Their tiny wings move in a figure 8 pattern which allows them to maneuver around extremely quickly and easily. They are the only bird that can hover in mid-air and fly backward. They are protective of their flowers and feeders by chasing off other birds. Hummingbirds are territorial creatures. This is because they tend to return from migration to the area where they were hatched. Research shows it is probable that the same hummingbirds return to the same flowers and feeders year after year.Hummingbirds are so unique and special in their own ways! Come to find out, our observations about their behavior are strongly backed by science. Instead, they hover in place and stare right back at us! They are very intelligent creatures, and it has created a deeper curiosity and respect in my boys for other living organisms in nature! Definitely five dollars well spent! Also Read: We literally stand with our noses to the window watching them…and they don’t shy away! It’s no exaggeration to say about 80% of the time there is at least one hummingbird at the feeder! And there are four of them that fight over it regularly. They’ve begun to recognize the “regulars”…even naming them! What a fun childhood memory! It’s a household chore on the list right up there with feeding the dog! Our boys don’t mind, though. Let me tell you, we have learned if you feed them, they will come!! The problem has now become keeping enough food on-hand and the feeder filled. Would they feel comfortable coming so near? Not to mention, it would be right up next to our busy, active house.

By choosing to hang the feeder there, it would be quite far from any of the flowers that naturally attract. Purely for our benefit, we have the perfect window in our eat-in kitchen area to provide easy viewing! However, as we hung the feeder, I worried the location was not ideal for attracting hummingbirds.
